i am going to write a small case study about my first gaming experience, what was important about the experience, how the experience has stayed with me throughout the years, the narrative/ story element of the game and how its influenced my ideas on the games i have and or going to be making or other products.
the first game i could remember playing was a little game known as motor-head which was created by digital illusions and published by gremlin interactive and was released on play-station 1 and some people described this game as an enigma and somewhere between wipe-out and ridge racer, for me however it was the most difficult and annoying game i have ever played and completed both dark soul games and the only thing that i have kept with me from motor-head in my journey to be a game developer is that difficult games are far more rewarding to play on, however in this i am going to focus on the game that influences me to this day and that game is GTA San Andreas.
GTA San Andreas is a rock-star north developed video game, and follows Carl Johnson as he returns to his childhood home, why this game was important for me was not only because it was the first game of its type i have ever played ( sandbox) and it also had one of the best characters in a game up to that point but it was important experience for me because it showed me the value of developed characters and how they can carry a weak story for example big smoke, someone who you meet at the beginning of the game a veteran of the streets who is there to show Carl the way after he has been away from grove street for so long to a money hungry obsessed character who ends up destroying all of his relationships and becomes the main villain, the dynamic of these two characters and how they evolve through out the game from close friends to bitter enemies for me made the game one of my favorite piece of media of all time.
the experience has stayed with me throughout the years in many ways like i mentioned before the in dept character study has influenced all the products i have made and going to make to have characters basically carry the story another way its influenced me is the amount of detail put into the game, before GTA san andreas sandbox games to the level where unknown or people did not pay much attention to them but after san andreas we have seen how nearly every game this year and last have a large amount of sandbox elements to them this made me realize that taking risks and going to technical ideas that are less known or unknown when creating a game will not only make you stand out from the pack but could make you an influencer in future games to come.
finally an example id like to show is my early access game Maze Run which at the moment is just using technical elements to drive the game however when i do complete the game its going to be heavily story based and focus more on the two characters Corner and Phil and how the maze changes their characters drastically.
